What is a strange attractor?

I did not design these images, I found them. All these animations are the result of a trajectory through a space that consists of one simple mathematic rule and a lot of repeated calculations. In most animations I slowly change two parameters in a circular loop.

The mathematical rule I use is a Strange Attractor. A Strange Attractor is a set of points in a dynamical system towards which the system is attracted. The strangeness of this attractor is that it has a very irregular fractal like shape. You can calculate where a point will end up the next step in time, but without this calculation it's impossible to predict where the point will be.

It's a matter of balance. In the middle of the space the points jump completely random, it's chaos. In the animation this looks like the noise you could see in old TV sets. Far from the centre the points move predictable.
Too much order is boring, the exciting things happened on the edge of chaos.

The Gumowski-Mira Strange Attractor is at the base of these animations. Sometimes I added a sinus function to make more waves.
